Relational autonomy and paternalism – why the physician-patient relationship matters

Abstract Both paternalism and relational autonomy are two concepts that much discussed in medical ethics. Strangely enough, they have hardly been considered together. How does the understanding justification of change if we take a (constitutively) as basis? From an individualistic autonomy, interferes individual sphere patient. It can be justified benefit to patient clearly outweighs extent violation their autonomy. I argue according other criteria come fore than those know from ‘classic debate’. Building on concept maternalism introduced by Laura Specker-Sullivan Fay Niker, propose nature quality physician-patient relationship, epistemic access patient’s pro-attitudes, physician’s motivation intervene, intersubjective recognition constitute relevant criteria. In addition, these provide helpful indications how relationships should structured order enable care avoid general.
